Since the 2007-2008 school year, our club has supported the Greater Latrobe School District’s Environmental Science Department in addressing stream bank erosion along Nine Mile Run as it flows through Rotary Park. Over three years, more than 200 high school students worked to install nineteen log structures that stabilize the banks and direct water flow, benefiting fish habitats. This effort has not only minimized erosion but also increased the fish species count from nine in 2007 to twenty-two in 2010. Through this project, students gained hands-on experience, connecting classroom concepts to real-world environmental solutions.
In March 2011, we were thrilled to learn that the Capstone’s Nine Mile Run Project at Rotary Park was one of five recipients of the Western PA Environmental Award, earning a $5,000 grant to extend the project further.
In 2024, we proudly joined four other donors to support the Greater Latrobe Capstone Project’s newest endeavor—the Apiary, which can house up to five honeybee hives. This latest initiative continues our commitment to environmental education and community improvement through hands-on learning.
